Honor Dr. King's Legacy
Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend
January 13 to 15, 2007
"There is nothing but a lack of social vision to prevent us from paying an adequate wage to every American [worker] whether he is a hospital worker, laundry worker, maid, or day laborer."
–Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Honor Dr. King’s Remembrance. The weekend of January 13 to 15, 2007, Interfaith Worker Justice, in partnership with the Let Justice Roll coalition, will be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday with a call for the nation to raise the minimum wage.
Dr. King believed that America’s religious values call for a society in which all workers can share in prosperity that they help create. A central demand of the 1963 March on Washington was “a national minimum wage act that will give all Americans a decent standard of living. ”
Honor Dr. King’s legacy. Plan a Living Wage event such as a church service, prayer vigil, or educational forum to help educate and mobilize your congregation to support an increase in the minimum wage.
IWJ’s resources for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday are Making the Dream a Reality, King, Faith, and Economic Justice, and Courage Points Us to the Light. These resources include responsive readings, prayers, and bulletin inserts.
Also, please take a minute to add your voice to the call for a higher federal minimm wage.
In addition, Let Justice Roll's complete Living Wage Days resources offer these and other materials for preparation for the celebration of King’s life. Use these resources to help you plan an event.
"Of all forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane."
–Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"You can't create a team spirit when the situation is so one-sided, when management gets so much and workers get so little of the pie."
–Sam Walton
