The New Sanctuary Movement

The New Sanctuary Movement is a coalition of interfaith leaders and participating congregations called by our faith to respond actively and publicly to the suffering of our immigrant brothers and sisters residing in the United States. We acknowledge that the large-scale immigration of workers and their families is complex. It is rooted in historical, global and economic causes that cannot be answered with simplistic or purely reactive public policy solutions. Our coalition is comprised of Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Protestant denominations from across the country and from diverse communities, reflecting a multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition spanning the political spectrum.

From its founding, America has been a land where diverse peoples have contributed to the growth and wealth of our nation. Immigrant workers and their families are no less committed to the values held dear by all of us. This moment in our nation's history, when large scale immigration with its attending social and economic consequences demands reform, the faith community is uniting to call for immigration policies that are both effective and humane.

Large scale immigration has created a complex social and political landscape that presents the nation with a new imperative and a new opportunity to deliver a moral, effective response. As our nation's policy makers consider immigration reform, faith leaders are also responding to the moral imperative to awaken the conscience and imagination of the nation, first through our congregations and then through the public. Our objective is to make visible human beings who are victims of hate, harm and unjust treatment. The New Sanctuary Movement's goal is protection, support, public education and, ultimately, repair of the broken immigration system.
