Quotes
from Seminary Summer
"I
have met workers in North Carolina and Texas who are working under
inhumane conditions for next to nothing. I have met religious leaders
who are willing to stand with and for those workers. I have seen
the power of a united religious community advocating for workers'
rights. I have seen countless people who work without ceasing for
the rights of others. Through this, I have learned that there are
a wide range of ways that I am called to 'be with' people. Ministry
is more than holding people's hands and helping them deal with their
situation. It is using the power of God to liberate people so that
systemic change can occur. It is taking the Good News outside of
the church walls and into the world." Clint Twedt-Ball,
Garrett Evangelical Seminary.
"Working
with the IWJ this past summer gave me the opportunity to refresh
my understanding of the Gospel. I not only worked in the traditional
aspects of ministry, but I also experienced the social dimensions
of Jesus' call for justice. I came in direct contact with the poverty
and the structural struggles of the many Mexican- and African- Americans
in the plants. Acknowledging that many of these people in need were
parishioners at the church where I was stationed was important for
me so that I could see that working in the church is not only doing
'churchy' things, but actually working for the good of humankind."Brother
Juan Molina, '97.
